Various districts in the Karnali region are reeling under a shortage of foodstuff. The Humla-based godown of Nepal Food Corporation lacks enough subsidised rice after it distributed 8,200 quintals within mid-April.
The remote region is highly food-insecure as local agriculture yield is too little to meet annual demand. As transportation cost is high, everyone cannot afford to buy rice in the market. The District Food Management Com-mittee has demanded an additional 2,000 quintals of subsidised rice. Of the 6,500 quintals set aside for Jumla, 4,300 quintals was supplied so far. The Jumla godown of NFC has demanded an additional 21,000 quintals.
While 8,100 quintals was allocated for Dolpa, 6,696 quintals has been distributed so far and the office has demanded 18,000 quintals more. Of the 13,300 quintals allocated for Mugu, 13,492 quintals has been sold. The Mugu godown has demanded an extra 12,500 quintals. The Mugu godown is facing difficulties in catering to customers due to the lack of subsidised foodstuff. “Around 900 quintals is necessary to meet the demand for one day. The godown has only 1,000 quintals,” said Mugu NFC office chief Hira Bahadur Singh. Shailendra Malla of Dhainkot had to return from the Mugu godown empty-handed. Ram Kumar Nepali of Sarmi-3 in Dolpa said people had not got subsidised rice in two months. “People have had to live without eating in the lack of rice,” he said.
A hotel owner in Gamgadhi said he lacks rice. The Zonal office, which is responsible for subsidised rice supply to the districts, says the provision could not be made available without funds. NFC offices in Nepalgunj and Surkhet have 25,000 quintals of rice. “Although the districts are demanding subsidised rice, we are yet to send the consignment in the lack of funds,” said zonal office chief Shankar Sapkota. Deputy General Manager of NFC Indra Prasad Sitaula promised immediate supply. “We lack funds but efforts are on to supply the rice in any way,” he said on the phone.
